Behind The Lens

Location

I shot this image of Miranda and her best friend, Kelly in my Studio, FireLillyCreations Photography, LLC located in East Bend, North Carolina. This was part of a collaboration with myself and Drive-In magazine. MissQueen PBR and Gwendolyn Graves provided hair and make-up.

Time

The original photo was taken on February 17, 2014 at 2:30 PM and the second photo taken around 3:30. The final editing process was done April 11, 2014 in Photoshop CS5.

Lighting

Fstop/9 exposure 1/125 sec. ISO 200 32 min focal length exposure bias +1 max aperture 4.5 metering patterned 35mm focal length

Equipment

I use Pro Master lighting strobes with a huge octagon soft box. Two in the front and two in the back. Cameras are Nikon D7100, D7200, D5000. D5000 captured this one. Nikon all the way!

Inspiration

Gwendolyn Graves provided the set design and I thought this would be a cute best friends photo. Plus it fits the beauty salon feel where ladies love to go gossip and complain about their man troubles. LOL!

Editing

I photographed several images of the girls separately and as they posed I acted out silly gossip conversations to get them in the mood. After the shoot, I manipulated the photo to include both ladies having a gab fest. The finish product produced a favorite of my collaborations with these two ladies. I added several filters and literally made a whole new floor so the scene would be cohesive. It was a fun project to do, but very time consuming.

In my camera bag

I just bought a NikonD7200 and love it. Its my second back up to the D7100. Before I used the D5000 as the second backup. I have retired that and given it to my assistant and husband, Douglas Ducky) Johnson. I have a lot of lenses!HA! Ok,here is the list: Two sets of Altura wireless flash trigger (cheap and fires every time!) Nikkor AFS Nikkor 50-200mm Nikon AFS Nikkor 18-55mm Nikon AFS Nikkor 50mm 1:18G Nikon AFS Nikkor 18-70mm 1:3.5-4.5G Nikon AFS Nikkor 70-300mm 1;4.5-5.6G AFS Nikkor 18-140mm 1:3.5-5.6G 52MM 0.43X Wide Angle High Definition Lens with Macro FotoTech ML-L3 Wireless Shutter Release Remote (Cheap and fun to play with!)

Feedback

After doing this about 12 plus years, I have found that clients love to be entertained and gladly accept any kind of direction. It was important to have the same even light for both ladies and not move the chair. Also using Photoshop to draw the floor and even out tones was a must. I already had the flooring down, but the key was to make it wider than it really was. I took about ten shots of each of them talking to someone that was not there, only the sound of my voice. I suggest to be patient, have fun with it, and remember if you make a mistake it could be a happy accident. :D
