Beautiful shot

Behind The Lens

This photo was shot in the Dubai Marina, facing the 'Tallest Neighborhood', a series of ultra-tall residential towers in Dubai.
Shot at night, around 9 p.m.
All natural light, which was a bit challenging since there were flood lights on the opposite side of the Marina facing directly towards me. I had to underexpose the image and bring the shadows back in Adobe Camera RAW to compensate for it.
Shot with a Nikon D800 and Nikkor 16-35 f/4 lens.
I was walking with my wife all the way around the Dubai Marina, looking for strong leading lines. I didn't see this angle until I crossed that bridge and walked back down to the Marina Walk, where the juxtaposition of the sweeping bridge with the massive buildings just jumped out at me. I took several exposures, and this one was one of the only ones that didn't have a boat flying by at the same time.
I ran this through a few Nik filters. I liked the desaturated tones with a hint of blue, which I added using a combination of Nik Silver Efex Pro 2 and Color Efex Pro 4 in separate layers using different opacities.
In my camera bag
I always have my Nikon D800, Nikkor 10.5mm fisheye, Nikkor 50mm f/1.4, Nikkor 16-35 f/4, and Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 I don't have lenses that cover all ranges, but I'm happy with the lenses in my bag, and with a 36 MP sensor, I can crop if I have to.
Shooting at night, of course use a tripod, and manually focus. For something like this, I usually shoot at f/11 and use the Live View mode, find the farthest bit of light I can, zoom all the way in, and focus until that bit is sharp. Also, with long exposures, shoot in mirror UP mode, with a timer, and/or a remote trigger to minimize any camera shake.
