Behind The Lens

Location

I actually took this photo while I was on the road in Wisconsin. Obviously I wasn't the one driving but I was looking out my window the whole trip with the window down trying to get some interesting shots while we were driving along. It was fun being able to see so many different views and capturing many different places.

Time

It was a little after noon in the summer with fairly clear skies throughout the day. Really nice road trip weather and not a single complaint about having those windows rolled down.

Lighting

It was important that it was nice and sunny out this day. Since we were going so fast along the highway it was important to have a higher shutter speed so that the pictures weren't blurred. A beautiful sunny day like this made taking photos a lot easier when we were driving around and resulted in having photos with a fast shutter speed that had enough light coming into the lens.

Equipment

I own a Nikon 5200 and it has been working nicely for me. I take photos more for the fun of it and a camera like the 5200 is wonderful for someone that enjoys creating something beautiful but also doesn't want to dish out, nor has, the cash for the really high end equipment.

Inspiration

I've lived in the Midwest of the United States, in Illinois, my whole life and have come to really appreciate the way the land around me looks. This particular photo was inspired by a visit I had made to southern Illinois when I visited family. We'd gone to visit a farm my cousin works at and see the cows up close. We pet the cows, road some tractors, and drove on roads that weren't paved to get there. It was really amazing seeing the way the family lived on that farm. This photo is kind of dedicated to that. It's a life completely different from my own.

Editing

That answer is a definite yes. I made the the photo black and white (Obviously right?) and then wanted to get a really high contrast in the cows and trees against the land and sky. In camera raw I played around with the colors in Greyscale and then adjusted the blacks / whites to get closer to my desired effect. I then used a gradient map to finish up with the look I was going for, along with other minor touch ups. I'm still learning but I did what I could.

In my camera bag

My equipment is very simple. I pack my Nikon 5200 and my Nikkor 18-200mm lens into my bag with a spare battery and some lens cleaner, then get going. I don't have much in ways of equipment but I always figure a good picture could come with even the simplest camera. If I was to ever pursue photography as a career then I'm sure I'd be willing to invest in more but as it is I'm still fairly new to taking photographs and don't require much.

Feedback

Honestly, the way I got this photo was by being a passenger on a road trip and just looking around and appreciating what there was to see around me. It wasn't difficult at all. Just look through your camera and if you see something that interests you, take the picture. In the end, if you're a fan of what you have then you're on the right track.
