Location
This photo was taken at the Melk Benedictine Abbey in Melk Austria. This incredible spiral staircase connects the grand library with the church below.Time
This is an interior shot taken during an afternoon tour of th Abbey.Lighting
I accessed this stair as part of a public tour, and as such had minimal equipment with me. Only the available incandescent source of light was used and as such I needed to brace myself for the handheld shot.Equipment
This shot was captured with a Canon 5D and a 24-105 f4.0 L IS (image stabilization) lens. No additional equipment was used.Inspiration
This is one of the most amazing spiral staircases in the world. It is small in diameter, but incredible in its design and use of faux painting to decorate and enhance it. I was just completely surprise by it beauty and had to get as many shots of it as possible before the tour guide demanded I leave.Editing
My general post processing for Black and White is to begin in Adobe Lightroom, then go to NIK Silver Effects Pro for the B&W conversion, and finally fine tune in Photoshop using the Dodge and Burn tools. In my camera bag
By typical travel bag has a Canon 5D mark II body and a backup 5D body. Lenses include a 24-105 f4.0 L IS, 70-200 f2.8 L IS, and a 16-35 f2.8 L. I always carry extra lens caps, polarizing filters, cleaning materials, extra batteries, and digital storage.Feedback
The key this shot was waiting for everyone to leave the shot, and bracing myself to help stabilize the camera. Just because the light is not perfect, does not mean you cannot still get a great shot. Slow down, brace yourself, compose, take a deep breath and shoot.
