Armadillo is a Spanish word meaning "little armored one" and refers to the bony plates that cover the back, head, legs and tails. Armadillos are the only living mammals that wear such shells. They have very poor eyesight and often wander in close, as this one did. They utilize their keen sense of smell to hunt.

Now don't laugh, but I never saw one so close and actually I don't think I've seen one that wasn't smashed on the road! This is a beautiful clear shot. Wish you had been able to get all of him in the picture, but understand how hard that must have been to even get a picture. I also shot mostly with the D 5100
