Behind The Lens

Location

I was shooting a set of senior portraits in woods behind the University of West Florida in my hometown of Pensacola, FL.

Time

As I was walking the woods looking for good shots for my client, I saw the late afternoon sun shining through the trees and I was stopped in my tracks to take this shot.

Lighting

The light pouring through the leaves and branches flooded the floor of wood. The light was getting close to the golden hour and it shown through the branches just perfectly.

Equipment

At that time I was using a Canon Xsi and shooting with the stock 18-55mm lens. I did not use a tripod or flash.

Inspiration

I truly love the way that the sun was being filtered through the branches and leaves. It gave the tree an eerie and ominous feel. I wanted to capture the feeling that the shadows portrayed.

Editing

I put it through Photoshop and removed the saturation for the black and white look. I felt it enhanced the ominous feel of the shadows.

In my camera bag

Apart from my camera and lenses, I have an extra memory card, my flash with a dedicated cord, various trinkets from different shoots and a pen. I always carry a pen.

Feedback

Always be on the lookout for the right shot. I didn't go out there looking to shoot a piece of art. It was a regular day doing a regular job and this shot was there. Don't be afraid of weird angles. In this digital world if it silly you can delete it. Always be ready to stop everything to get the shot!
