Behind The Lens

Location

The shot was taken in studio of Medial Centre Paneurouni University.

Time

It was Friday evening, I remember that we were in rush, because Medial Centre was almost closing. But we made it as I imagined in the first place. This shot was taken on February 20, 2015 at 6:33 pm.

Lighting

In this photo I was focusing on shadows, so I used contrast hard lighting. Big difference between light and shadow also made that dramatic mood. The main light is only strobe and fill light is made by white reflector.

Equipment

This was shot on Canon 7D, lens Tamron 17-50mm on tripod. Strobe is Elinchrom BRX 400 and white reflector (as fill light).

Inspiration

While I was making photos for school project. I got inspired by golden hour light which makes long shadows. I wanted to combine two actions as symbols (sport-man doing handstand and beast wolf).

Editing

Post-process was little tricky, because I needed to matte-paint silhouette of wolf and also eliminate original shadow, that was on the wall. There were lot of Dodge & Burning and wondering - how will that wolf looks like.

In my camera bag

My universal gear is Camera: Canon 7D, Lenses: Tamron 17-50 2,8 II, Canon EF 70-200 USM, Flash: Canon 430 EX II. That's what I usually use for reportage or documentary. In the studio is better to choose lenses with fixed focal lenght and of course strobes. Despite all don't forget that's not only the camera who makes the photos :).

Feedback

You should always start with pre-production, visualising your scene and preparing everything you will need for it. While shooting, the perception of the light is essential, you must move with your light by little steps until you are satisfied. Always pay attention to composition and perspective. In the post-production use Dodge & Burn and also Frequency separation is good idea for tasks like this. Wish you good light and nice day :).
