Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the living room of my home in Clarksville, Virginia. My wife and I had picked up this beautiful blown glass vase from the glass works at Historic Jamestown and I wanted to get some practice with HDR photography with the beautiful contrasts in colors between the flower and the blue of the glass.

Time

I took this photo in the evening hours, after I got home from work.

Lighting

The lighting is from the normal incandescent light bulb in the lamp on the sofa table where the vase was displayed.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon Rebel xTi, using an f/2.8 100 mm Canon macro lens on a tripod with a remote trigger and no flash.

Inspiration

The contrasting colors of the flower and the glass inspired me to try an HDR image to try to capture the rich variations in color that I could see with the naked eye.

Editing

This image is an HDR composite of 3 images exposed at approximately 2 stops between exposures. I compiled the 3 images using Luminance HDR processing software.

In my camera bag

I always carry a range of different lenses in my bag, including my f/2.8L 70 - 200mm USM Canon lens, my f/5.6 28-135mm IS kit lens, and the 100mm macro lens I used for this shot. My bag also contains Quantaray 2X Telextender and 100 - 400mm f/5.6 lens, my Canon speed light, right angle viewfinder, and remote trigger.

Feedback

My advice would be to play around with techniques you pick up from Photographic magazines, websites, and forums to see what you can do with the equipment you have and your own talents. You might just amaze yourself in the process.
