Behind The Lens

Location

I took this picture right outside my back door. This little guy became so tame he would appear in the morning for a pinch of bird seed. Several times taken from my hand. He posed nicely, in perfect light, so I had to take the shot.

Time

Probably around 9am when I first went outside the house.

Lighting

The morning lighting was excellent, although bird shots can also be very good in overcast lighting, giving nice gradation of tones.

Equipment

I used a hand held Lumix FZ 200, nothing else. My go-everywhere, do everything camera.

Inspiration

Affection for this little guy, and the fact that he posed so well for me on the branch.

Editing

Minimal. I like natural shots without too much post-processing. Apart from cropping to best effect, I usually add a touch more contrast, and a little sharpening, but this image didn't really need any work.

In my camera bag

The Lumix FZ 200. I also have a tripod and monopod, and I am experimenting currently with an LT55 teleconverter. I also acquired a graduated filter kit recently to improve my landscapes.

Feedback

The main issue with birds is getting close enough for a good shot. This guy was cooperative, but mostly they are not. Patience is required. Sit or crouch down quietly to lose your body outline, keep movements slow and wear dull green colours. The birds can forget you are there and you can get a shot. Otherwise use a hide, using a small hunting hide can work I am told, though I have not tried it.
