Location
The image was taken at Goomburra Camp grounds at Goomburra east of Warwick Queensland Australia and is one of my favourite images. These two birds were from a flock and inseparable.Time
This was mid morning with the sun behind and to the left when I pressed the trigger. A flock come down to feed on the grounds and then left but these two seemed to know I was stalking them for a good shooting angle and set still for me.Lighting
I was fortunate with the natural lighting as it was already mid morning the light was unusually soft for this time of day. The light was bouncing off the side of the caravan nearby at an acute angle which softened it considerably. I was able to get a catch light in the eye of the bird in the left.Equipment
To capture this image I used a Pentax K10D with a Pentax 18-55 lens. Shot at a 35mm equivalent 82mm. Settings were F9 @ 1/320s ISO400. The aperture was chosen to blur the background without loosing definition of the trees indicating a bush setting. ISO was set to 400 to enable a fast enough shutter speed in case the birds started to move.Inspiration
These birds normally don't flock together in such large numbers as this day. In itself this would be of interest but I soon realised the two kookaburras featured would not leave each other I concentrated on them until I could isolate them. They posed beautifully for me.Editing
The shot was taken in RAW format and processed in Camera raw in Adobe Bridge, all adjustments were done in Camera raw. These include contrast , highlights, shadows, clarity and saturation. All adjustments were slight. Tone curves were not adjust but individual colour channels tweaked to bring out the blue in the water and the green yellow balance in the foliage. This was done carefully so as not to alter the white of the feathers to dramatically. In my camera bag
At the time of this shot I carried a Pentax K10D and two Pentax kit lenses, an 18-55 and 55-200 APC format (equivalent 24-85 and 85 -450 in 35mm format). A Metz AF-1 flash unit, uv and nd filters, remote cable release, electronic shutter release and a Manfrotto 190XPROB tripod with an 804rc2 head. I travel with a 55cm 5 in 1 glantz reflector.Feedback
This area can be harsh as it had come of the back of a five year drought to be faced with devastating floods which changed the Dalrymple Creek course. The area was on the recovery of the floods which brought the wildlife back in numbers and it was this timing which enabled me to get the image. Researching past and prevailing conditions will greatly enhance your opportunities.
