I was experimenting with long exposure photography in my bedroom when I made this. It was actually an accident. I was moving a lighter around my shoes just to light them up, when I realized that the flame got in parts of the photo. But it seemed to add a nice touch to the photo in general so I kept it.

Behind The Lens

Location

In my bedroom, no crazy setups.

Time

A pretty average time actually, about 3PM but I had closed the windows and blocked out any possible light.

Lighting

I just used a lighter. How much more basic can you get?

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D3100 with a 18-55 mm lens and a lighter.

Inspiration

I was just experimenting with long exposure photography in my room and just got really lucky. Multiple attempts after this photo was taken and I couldn't replicate it.

Editing

Not much, just opened the photo in Photoshop and added a bit of contrast and reduced some noise.

In my camera bag

Some pretty basic stuff, just a Nikon D3100 and a 50mm 1.8 lens.

Feedback

Just experiment. Take your camera and just go out, or don't and stay in your bedroom like I did. But the point is if you experiment you allow yourself to learn and practice that specific type of photography allowing you to master it.
