Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on the west coast of Ireland. It was my first time traveling and it was my first time seeing a castle in person. The location of this picture is an incredibly important part of the overall photo, it's where I began my journey of discovering who I was as a young woman in this world.

Time

I took this photo in the late morning. It was a typical cold and windy winter day in Ireland. I was renting a room in a woman's cottage in Kilcolgan. I wanted to discover parts of Ireland that weren't "touristy", I certainly got what I asked for. I woke up to the sound of dishes clanking and a man speaking in the kitchen. When I walked out of my bedroom I saw an older gentleman and a young boy sitting at the kitchen table. The man stood up, removed his hat and extended his hand toward me and said "Hello! I'm Liam and this is my grandson. I'm here to pick up the dog and take him for a walk, would you like to take a ride with us and I'll show you around the town? As long as you don't mind riding in my dog van." I couldn't believe that this complete stranger, who was also the town dog walker, was willing to drive me around to see the sites. So of course I took his offer. This castle was the second stop on our drive.

Lighting

For me, the lighting for this photo was perfect. It was overcast grey skies, but still bright enough for a clear photo. It set the mood perfectly for a black and white shot.

Equipment

This photo, like most of my photos, was shot with an IPhone 6. Most people look at me funny when I say that, but I find that subject and editing are the two most important aspects of creating a quality image. Cameras are great, I do own one, but IPhone tends to be my go to.

Inspiration

I was so impressed with the history of Ireland. It's as if everything has been preserved in a time capsule. To me, this photo completely captures the beauty of Ireland. It also captures a moment in my life where I was incredibly content with where I was both in real time and in life. Like most photos, It captures a story in my life.

Editing

I have a basic routine for my photos. I don't like to over edit photos. I do basic corrections in Photoshop and then I use Lightroom to add the finishing touches.

In my camera bag

I'm still starting out in photography and I'm what I like to call a minimalist in most aspects, photography included. I generally carry my Nikon D3200 and my IPhone 6. I don't own any tripods or lenses. I plan to invest in more equipment in the future, but currently I feel as though anyone can create great images as long as they have a camera and an open mind.

Feedback

For me, everything is about the weather. I tend to only go out to shoot on overcast days. That's the best time to capture moody, flat images. Which are what I tend to prefer.
