This photo was taken on the coast of Ireland in the town of Doolin. I was on vacation with friends and we had spent the first half of the morning exploring the famous Cliffs of Moher and walking the trail back to the sleepy little town of Doolin. After we got back to our hostel I had the urge to go explore the rest of the tiny town and the rural coastland surrounding it so we walked down a road out of town until we were good and lost and it started to rain on us. At some point we found our way to the coast and began walking in the direction we knew the town was in and eventually made it to this spot. I had been thinking about the cliffs all day and when we crested a small hill and I could see the town with the cliffs in the distance I knew a picture was on the way.Time
This was late afternoon just after some of the usual mid afternoon showers.Lighting
The low clouds provided nice soft fill light across the landscape and created a beautiful misty atmospheric haze over the famous Cliffs of Moher seen in the distance.Equipment
This was taken with my trusty D750 and my go Nikkor 70-200 F2.8 to create the compression in the landscape between me, the town and the cliffs.Inspiration
After wandering around through some of the beautiful green farmland on the coast we finally reached a spot where we could just see the edge of the town and the incredible cliffs behind it. Between the immense green grass, the ancient looking stone walls, the tiny edge of town and the misty cliffs in the background this shot completely captured the essence of this small coastal Irish town and remains my favorite from the trip and one of my all time favorites.Editing
Very minor adjustments in exposure and color. I tend not to spend a lot of my time correcting images after shooting other than bringing out a bit of color or cropping when I see the opportunity. I do like to go back through my images and look at them as black and whites but my primary instinct is generally to capture a moment the way I see it at the time.In my camera bag
My bag for travel photography is a very simple one, it includes: my Nikon D750 and D800, a Nikkor 14-24mm F2.8, a Nikkor 24-70mm F2.8, a Nikkor 70-200mm F2.8 and occasionally the "nifty 50" Nikkor 50mm F1.8. I like to think that with these lenses and bodies I am relatively well prepared to capture any moment that I may stumble across with the lens speed necessary to shoot in low light or freeze a moment. I also love having the ability to go in close and compress with 70-200 for some of those wonderful detail shots or go wide with the 14-24 to capture a scene in its entirety.Feedback
When you are traveling in a remote area like this small town in rural Ireland it is important to take into consideration some of the prominent features that make this area beautiful. Obviously for this particular shot this was very simple, the cliffs are the most prominent landmark in the area and finding a way to frame them was on the top of my list of priorities so this shot came pretty naturally. It is very important to take into consideration time of day, you know, golden hour blah blah blah, I happened to get lucky with the soft lighting from the overcast skies but I can't help but wish I had the chance to reshoot this image with a beautiful sunrise or sunset.
