Behind The Lens
Location
This photo was taken in Xinjiang, China, at the edge of the Gobi desert. We were running around, when I saw these two girls playing with a red flag ... I didn't think much, just pointed my camera, and I'm proud to cath this very moment.Time
It was early afternoon, about 2 PM local time. The sun was burning on our heads, and there was no wind at all.Lighting
It is always hard to shoot in those ultra bright natural light conditions, when the sun is directly over your head, and there is very little to absolutely no shadow around. I picked a very low ISO setting and a high shutter speed to avoid over exposure.Equipment
This one was taken with a simple Nikon Coolpix P80. I left my more expensive cameras at home since I was afraid of sand and sun. I remember being quite far from the actual scene, and just zoomed in - no tripod was used.Inspiration
As a photographer, I am always fascinated by contrasts, interesting moments, unusual things that don't happen very often. Seeing these two girls play with the flag reminded my of the famous raising the flag picture at Ivo Jima, with a funny twist.Editing
I didn't do much post-processing, just adjusted the colors a little bit in Lightroom. In my camera bag
Normall, I travel with a Canon Rebel T3i, a tele lens, and various filters.Feedback
My advice: always keep your eyes open, especially with children around. Be prepared, set your camera up for the environment beforehand ... if you start adjusting your settings when you see a great potential scene, it might be too late. Be alert, be prepared, be curious.
