Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken on the Wyoming side of the Grand Tetons in July. We were on a move across the country and stopped to wait for sunset.

Time

I took this around 5:30 in the afternoon/evening as I was waiting for the sun to set.

Lighting

The cloud was just above and slightly forward of the peak so it shadowed the foreground but still lit the Tetons.

Equipment

I used my trusty Nikon D90 that I've had since 2009 paired with my Tokina 11-16mm lens at f/8 and 16mm. I was using a lightweight Vanguard tripod. This was an HDR shot bracketed at 1/1600, 1/4000, & 1/400.

Inspiration

I loved the way the sun was shining through the cloud and sending its rays down over the Tetons.

Editing

I processed it first with NIK HDR Efex Pro 2 to get the initial HDR image, then I used Photoshop to do some sharpening, levels adjustments, then made a black and white adjustment layer before dodging & burning in to bring out more of the sun rays and some of the foreground elements.

Feedback

Since my husband is in the Coast Guard we move around the U.S. lot. We've made 3 cross-country moves in the last 10 years. I always look at the route we are taking and try to plan for the things I might like to photograph. That way we can try to schedule our stops at places where I can take advantage during morning or evening light to get some pictures of all of the beautiful scenery in this country. I also keep my camera within easy reach in case I see something that happens to catch my eye and need to pull over. I never know if I will see a lot of these things again, so I try to stop as much as I can to take pictures.
