Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the garden behind my home (from inside the house, so through the window glass).

Time

Actually time of the day was even not that important for me the day I made the picture, since I was playing with my new SIGMA 150-500 for whole the afternoon. The picture was taken 21-3-2015 in the middle of the day around 2:40 PM. Looking backwards, zctually time for this specific shot was important because I needed the good light conditions.

Lighting

Thanks to the weather condtions the light was good. It was a sunny day, but veil clouds avoided harsh light condtions. Another thing is that good light was important since this picture was made from inside the house with, so through glass, using my 150-500mm lens.

Equipment

This was shot on a Sony A350, handheld, using a Sigma 150-500 lens. No flash, through window-glass (that's why it's lacking optimal sharpness to my opinion), 1/125s - f6.3 - ISO 400 - 500mm).

Inspiration

Actually I was playing with my new SIGMA 150-500 for whole the afternoon; both inside and outside the house. I've a pretty large garden, weather conditions were good, so it was a perfect chance to learn to work wiht my new lens. Thanks to leftover winterfood I was lucky to have a lot of birds in the garden that were perfect "models" for that day. So to be honest a combination of luck, light & practice...

Editing

Actually quite some postprocessing was done. Sharpening, Noise reduction, light correction (given that the picture was taken throuhg glass), and quite some other stuff).

In my camera bag

On my Sony A350 my walkaround lens is an average multi purpose 15-50mm/2.8 lens. But the lens choice normally is a specific choice based on the goals I have when shooting pictures. Lenses I uses: 15-50mm/2.8 (multi purpose: indoor & outdoor), 18-250mm/3.5-6.3 (summer holiday walkaround lens), a prime 100mm/2.8 Macro (Macro/Portrait), 50mm/1.8 (various purposes), a prime 700-200/2.8 (sports) and a 150-500 (Nature/Animals) Besides this I own a smail point&shoot pocket camera (multi purpose including street photograpy) and given the age of my Sony A350 I'm looking for replacement...

Feedback

Most important is knowing your equipment very wel (including limitations) and knowing the (behaviour of) the potential subject (in this case the Robins, which I observed in my garden several times). Besides this it's all about light, patience & shooting and sometimes a little help like feeding the birds regularly in this case.
