I live in Middlewich in Cheshire. I was walking along the Trent & Mersey Canal on a snowy morning in January when I took this picture. I remember the day as I'd dropped my children at school, and it was on my way back that I received a phone call from school. Luckily I'd taken this shot before the call. I must of been the first person that morning to walk down this path, so the snow was crisp, though there were a few times, I thought I might end up in the canal.Time
This was taken about 10:30 in the morning. I'd taken the children to school and was walking the dog that day. I turned for home and a bit further along I decided to take a shot of the canal, and this is what turned up.Lighting
Lighting wise, this was all natural light. I just managed to capture it at the right moment in time.Equipment
Canon EOS 700D Normally I have my ND Grad filter in place, however due to the day itself, I had taken the filter off a some point. I was lucky enough not to have to use anything with this shot.Inspiration
This was one of those shots that, had no thought about it, Id just turned to walk back home and I wanted to capture the snowy scene, that was calming and would remind me of how beautiful snow can be. Seeing as we don't really get that much here in the UK, I thought I'd better make the most of it.Editing
Normally, when I come home and look at any of my images, I may crop them a tiny bit, or use light room to enhance them. This shot though didn't take much enhancement, and when I think on, I put it into the "punch" setting, which just gave it that little bit extra.In my camera bag
I try not too take too much out and about if I can help it. A spare battery, and my filters of course. It just depends on the day and what I want to get. If I want to go for wildlife then I will also take out my 100-300mm lens. Most of the time, because I'm still starting out and getting used to what I can do etc, I use the bog standard lens of 18-55mm. I also carry my canon powershot camera with me, which is quite good on zooming in and handy to have in my pocket.Feedback
When I'm taking a picture, I don't tend to think about specifics. I always take a few of the same shot, just in case anything changes. You can always delete the extras when you get home. When I think of an image I want, what tends to happen is that I won't capture that image as it's simply not there. My thought is that the actual image comes from the heart and learning to let yourself see with the heart and not always with the eyes. Sometimes just turning and taking the shot, will give you a result that you are happier with than if you looked for the actual shot. Some of my shots, including this one are simply flukes. Natural images often have more meaning to them, and I like to think that an image tells a story or that you can imagine yourself being there in that moment in time. It's all about being in the right place at the right time. You can prepare all you like, have the most expensive equipment, and yet some shots are just there. To me a picture is not only about the image itself, it's about the smells, the sounds and even the feel of the weather. I still refer to myself as a beginner, I'm still learning and so there are good shots and bad. I tend to look at what others do, what inspires me and what I love. For me, that is being outdoors, walking the dog and just listening to the birds sing. For anyone, it's about knowing your equipment, what it can and can't do, and experimentation. The most important thing though at the end of the day...... Enjoy yourself, love what you do and why you're doing it. If you're questioning it, or not sure, take a step back. If you're not sure about the image, why not just give it a go and share the image, you never know what will happen.
