Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Addo Elephant Park close to Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape, South Africa

Time

We had spotted two elephants in a relatively open area that seemed to be sparring and playing. We decided to park off and watch them for a while. After quite a bit of sparring they eventually came together in the pose above and stayed like that for about two minutes before turning away from each other and wandering off in different directions

Lighting

Lighting unfortunately played very little part in this photograph - it was the middle of the day and I had to make do with what nature provided

Equipment

I was shooting from the cab of my 4x4 Ford Ranger pick-up using a FinePix S5700 S700

Inspiration

This was just one of a number of shots I took of the interaction between these two elephants

Editing

None whatsoever - I usually use lightroom, but in this case the photo is exactly as shot

In my camera bag

I have moved on from the Finepix camera to a Nikon D5100 and Nikon D5200 with a range of lenses, and from there to a Nikon D750 with my "go-to" lens being a Nikon 28-300m. I also have Nikon 50mm / Nikon 105mm / Nikon 200mm / Nikon 70-400mm / Tamron 10-20mm and a Tamron 150-60mm

Feedback

The great wildlife photographers have seemingly endless time to wait for the right captures - the rest of us have to simply take the opportunities when they arise and make the best of them.
