Location
I took this photograph of the Red deer stag at Richmond Park near London. This was my first visit to the park and somewhere I had always wanted to go.Time
This image was taken on the 11th October 2014, just before 09.00 in the morning.Lighting
The sun hadn't long come out, but it was still cold enough to light the breath coming from the stag. The grass just in front of the stag caught the light beautifully. I had hoped for a light covering of mist like you see in the iconic images of red deer, but unfortunately that wasn't going to be.Equipment
I used a Nikon D7000 with a Nikon telephoto lens at 300mm on a tripod. It was exposed at 1/800th sec at F6.3Inspiration
I had always wanted to photograph the red deer during the rut and especially at Richmond Park as they are so approachable. When an opportunity arose to visit London during the rutting season i jumped at the chance to combine the two.Editing
I don't believe in using photoshop too much, as I like to get my images correct in camera. Therefore I just tweaked the levels and added a liitle bit of sharpening. In my camera bag
I always have my D7000 and change the lenses that I carry depending on what subject I am shooting. If I am taking nature photographs I like to have a telephoto and a wide angle lens just in case. The Nikon 18mm-200mm lens is very versatile. I also always carry a spare battery and a set of filters for landscape work.Feedback
Whatever subject you are interested in photographing, always do background checks before hand. There is a lot of information available on the best places to go and best times of day. If you don't succeed straight away don't give, keep trying and good luck.
