"The Retreat" Built in 1799 west of Bluemont Virginia on the bank of the Shenandoah River by War of 1812 Veteran, General Thomas Parker. His son Richard Elliot Parker who also lived at the home presided as a federal judge at the trial of John Brown following the notorious raid in Harper's Ferry. During the Civil War, the battle of Cool Springs was fought at the rivers edge and would have been easily witnessed from the front steps, July 18, 1864.
