I've been wanting to take some pictures in the train yard next to my place for the longest time. I saw the sunset reflecting of the tracks on my way home, and pulled over to try to capture the moment.

Location
This was taken at a train yard that I pass on my commute home in the San Francisco/Bay Area. I've always loved the mixture of metal, wood, and gravel.Time
The colors that come during sunset this time of year are amazing in this area. The clouds that happen to be coming in made for nice separation of the spectrum.Lighting
I knew I wanted to pull some of the lighting into the foreground, so I found a particularly worn part of the track to reflect some of the sky off of. I also really like the headlights on the fence, but this isn't really the focal point of the picture.Equipment
This was taken handheld with a sony RX1. I've done away with traditional DSLRs in the past couple years. I love that the RX1 gives you amazing image quality, and I can always have it on me to capture opportunistic shots. It's nice not having to deal with G.A.S. too.Inspiration
This was right when I got my camera, so I was eager to play with it. This shot presented itself to me when I was driving home, and I immediately pulled over to capture it.Editing
I wish I did some really skilled work, but this is more or less all natural colors. I took down the exposure a bit to let the colors shine through, and boosted the saturation slightly to pull out the subtle color differences in the cloud. The sharpness is also enhanced to bring out the rocks. In my camera bag
I have my camera and that's about it. Sometimes, I'll bring my tripod or a Joby if I'm going out to shoot specifically.Feedback
As noted in my bag, I usually only have my camera on me. I believe it's more important to have a great piece of glass on you at all times, then to have tremendous amounts of gear. The fixed 35 mm limits what sort of pictures I can take, but it also forces creativity. Just go out there and shoot. I am by no means a professional photographer, so I can only be ready to take a shot rather than going out and looking for one.
