Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Jackson Falls in Jackson, NH This is a popular spot for tourists as well as photographers.

Time

This was taken early to mid morning.

Lighting

It was a beautiful May morning. The trees along the falls are great for diffusing light and the sun was not up too high at this point.

Equipment

This was shot with an Olympus E-510 camera. I used an Olympus 70-300 zoom with a UV and Polaroid filters and a vintage, borrowed tripod.

Inspiration

I am lucky to live in an area that is home to a number of great photographers who occasionally offer classes. As I am primarily self taught, this class was an opportunity for me to step out of my comfort zone of macro work and benefit from some one on one instruction. I tend to look for ways to take shots that are a little out of the ordinary and these rocks seemed to be a natural frame for the falls. It was also a great chance to practice shooting moving water.

Editing

The only thing I did to this photo was crop it.

In my camera bag

I typically shoot with one of my point and shoot cameras and almost always have two with me. If I'm using the E-510 I would bring along my MeFOTO tripod, a 35 and a 50 macro lens, my 70-300 zoom and maybe a 40-150 lens. I keep a few UV and Polaroid filters in my bag, lens cloth and brush. I'm learning to be sure I bring a hat with me for those sunny days.

Feedback

I'm still a novice photographer. I envy those who understand the technical aspects of photography so my advice is pretty simple. Just get out and shoot - any where, any time. Look for interesting set ups. See things from a different perspective. Take multiple shots of the same thing with different settings, filters or lenses. Take time not only to look around you but to really feel what's out there. Be patient. Best of Luck!
