Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in the living room of my home in Houston Texas. My sisters were visiting and were kind enough to be my models for the day.

Time

If I remember correctly, my hubby was at work for the day. So I would guess midday. Between 1-3pm.

Lighting

I had one flash with lightbox. The flash seen in her eyese was from the on camera flash. I am patiently waiting for the Phottix Odin II to be released for my Sony. Until then my options are limited to position of flash, especially during the day.

Equipment

Sony A77 and off camera flash with lightbox.

Inspiration

After living in a Muslim country (UAE) for nearly 6 years I became accustomed to headscarves that my friends wore. I noticed after removing the headscarf that I would barely recognize who they were unless I looked them in the eyes. The same goes for those putting on a headscarf that doesn't normally wear one. I sent this photo to my mom and she didn't recognize it was her own daughter. It shows how we see people as they look. The headscarf forces a new perspective. More attention to detail. Therefore more attention. The eyes are actually very powerful.

Editing

As I was new to flash (And still am) the photo was way overexposed. I did do some photo processing in Lightroom. But nothing extreme; changing the shadows, hightlights and adjusting the tone curve.

In my camera bag

My bag is a huge backpack that is not only my camera bag but my diaper bag. As a momma of two and hate carrying bags around I also include my wetwipes and diapers, maybe some toy cars, 4 lenses, a flash, a diffuser for the flash (which is large than the flash itself), 2 cameras, cleaners, batteries, and a plastic bag. We are at the park a lot..and in Houston we get a lot of unexpected or expected rain. When it says 30% chance...it could really be that 30% chance. But don't break your plans for rain until it rains.

Feedback

Contrast the eyes. My sister chose gold because it makes her eyes stand out. I bet a different colored scarf would give it an extra pow. :).
