In the middle of the Detroit River lies Belle Isle, a sprawling park designed by the same landscape architect responsible for New York's Central Park, Frederick Olmsted sits a Nature Zoo. The first Zoo opened in 1895 with just a few deer and a bear. The Control of the zoo was passed to the Detroit Zoo in 1941. Then the original and mostly forgotten zoo was closed in 2002, (thanks to then Major Kwame Kilpatrick. In 2005, the Detroit Zoo opened the Belle Isle Nature Zoo at the former nature center on the island. ( belleislenaturezoo.org- )

Now most island visitors would never know the original Zoo was once there.
