Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken at Taylor Beach an Vancouver Island B.C. Canada at low tide.

Time

This was taken at sunrise. We have amazing sunrises and sunsets here but they are not consistent you can go to a spot and think the sunrise is going to be amazing , then a low layer of cloud sits along the mountains in the far distance and wrecks the entire shot. This was one of those morning that I was glad I got up at 5:14 in the morning. I believe this picture was around 6:30 a.m. It was in October so it was very cold down by the ocean.

Lighting

I took multiple shots as I walked up the beach to find the spot that looked just right and then just wailted for the sun to rise to the spot where it brings out the most colour which is usually just before it is in view or shortly there after depending on the clouds. It's all about patience, but i wasn't complaining as I had a front row seat to what you are seeing in this photo.

Equipment

I use a Canon t4i, basic tripod, 18-135mm lens set at 18mm. Once the sun comes out I use a polarized lens filter.

Inspiration

The rocks in the foreground. The low tide brings out these rocks which are smooth and glossy from the tide. The larger rocks in front are deposited from a glacier passing through here millions of years ago. In the far distance is the olympic mountain range which helps block the sun from the camera lens while the sky gets lit up with all of natures colours. I usually just walk the beach back and forth at the spot until the angle looks just right to me then I set up the tripod.

Editing

I use lightroom 5. I adjusted highlights, shadows, blacks and whites, clarity and vibrance and sharpness. I try my best to not mess with a photo too much. I like to get it to look like what I see with my naked eye. The camera doesn't always do that so I find that lightroom gives me the tools to make it happen. I am not a fan of crazy oversaturated pictures. I like crisp clear vibrant shots.

In my camera bag

Canon t4i. 18-135 lens, canon 100-400 lens. uv filter, polarized filter, charger, cleaning cloth. I use a small canon bag single strap backpack, this stuff prettty much fills it. I will bring a tripod with me if I am going to be taking landscapes or doing HDR photography with multiple images.

Feedback

Find the spot you think is going to work in advance if you can. Show up early, because like here the tide height is always different and you have to be able to find the right spot to set up. Patience is the key, plus a lot of shots. The hardest part for me in this shot was getting the sky in all of its full colours which last only a few minutes and getting the rock in the foreground to look just right. If too dark and you try to brighten post processing it can bring in a lot of noise and ruin the shot. If it doesn't work one day try another. I have been to this spot multiple times and this is the only time it has looked this good to me. I always just go with my gut have a plan but be ready to go with the flow depending on what you see that day. On my way back to my truck after this shot for example a family of River Otters came down the beach at the waters edge. So I just sat there and waiting for them to go by me and got a few pics of them as well.Nature is always changing and it is our challenge to try to capture it and share it with others.
