I like this picture not for the light but for the way the trees grow toward the light. Possibly a most northern or southern hemisphere but not in between. I'm thinking this for the leaning of the trees. This does not appear to be a hillside. Very nice capture.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this picture at Algonkian Park in Potomac Falls VA. Its a suburb of Washington D.C. and the Potomac River flows through this park.

Time

A little before 9:00 am on a crisp fall day. It was actually almost the end of fall in the beginning of November

Lighting

I was walking back towards my car after having taken all the pictures for the day. It was quite cold and the warmth of the car was very inviting. The sun hit my eyes and I looked up. The light, the situation, the trees, the halo - Everything was perfect. It was Mother Nature's gift to me. All I had to do was take out my camera, sit down on the grass and click.

Equipment

I used my Sony Nex-7n with Sigma 17-50mm f2.8. No tripod or flash was used because everything was perfect.

Inspiration

How can you see a scene like that and not take a photo? Its impossible not to want to capture the moment irrespective of what gear you have. When I uploaded this photo on facebook, I didnt have a caption on it. One of my friends said that it needs a quote befitting the picture. For me the halo in the background stood out like a frame to everything and it was almost as if, the light was finding its way through the trees. So I captioned this photo as: “There is a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in.” ? Leonard Cohen, Selected Poems, 1956-1968 Its the light that lets you see but its the shadows that create the mystery! That pretty much summed it up for me.

Editing

Basic post processing in lightroom to reduce the washed out sky.

In my camera bag

Camera - Sony Nex-7n with lens - Sigma 17-50mm f2.8. I am discovering the magic of filters now and they are gaining presence.

Feedback

Keep an open eye and an open mind. The best picture of the day may come when you least expect it as it happened with me. Whenever there is the sun, fall colors and shadows, the perfect photo opportunity is just around the corner. The best time to capture such images is before the sun is at its peak in the early morning or late evening just before and after sunset. In my case, the presence of the leaves on the ground added to the drama which was pure coincidence since I went towards the end of fall. When you see such a scene, just take what is offered to you - you don't need any additional lighting to enhance it. It is perfect as it is.
