Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on Machias Island which is located near Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick, Canada. The only was onto the island is to go with a company called Sea Watch Tours out of Grand Manan or with a different company out of Maine.

Time

This was taken in the early afternoon during late summer, 2014.

Lighting

Natural lighting was used for this exposure. It was slightly overcast so there was nice even lighting.

Equipment

This was shot handheld, on a Nikon D7000 with a 70-300mm Nikon Lens.

Inspiration

I had visited this area about ten years before this photo was taken. At that time I had a point and shoot film camera and swore one day I would return to photograph the Atlantic Puffin with a proper camera and lens.

Editing

I did very little post-processing to this image. I increased the contrast slightly and crushed the blacks.

In my camera bag

In my camera bag I generally have my Nikon D7100 attached to my 70-300mm lens, 50mm lens, SB-700 flash, gorilla pod, cleaning kit, extra battery, extra memory cards in protective pelican case, and occasionally my back-up body; a Nikon D90.

Feedback

If you want to capture a tight portrait similar to this one you should wait patiently in the blind you are assigned to while on the tour. Take lots of frames and look out for interesting behaviour and good lighting situations. It's important to make the eye of the bird a prominent part of the photo when shooting a wildlife portrait.
