The bride was getting ready for her big day. Her mother was helping her into her dress while her bridesmaids looked on in excitement. The room was full of people, half empty drink cups, and bridal accessories. But in this single moment, everything was calm and quiet.

Behind The Lens

Location

In a cluttered loft space about thirty minutes before the bride walked down the aisle. The wedding was held at the home of the groom's aunt.

Time

It was early evening, about 5:00 pm. The sky was cloudy and gray, threatening rain.

Lighting

There was one single window. I asked the bride if she would mind getting dressed in this open loft right at the top of the stairs instead of the dark bedroom. This single window allowed for just enough light to shine in and create a moody, dramatic image.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon T3i using a 50mm lens.

Inspiration

The day had been stressful for the bride, the rain was really ruining her outdoor ceremony plans. She wanted everything to go smoothly, and it was just not happening. As she started getting her gown on, her nieces were running around playing loudly, her bridesmaids were all abuzz talking and getting their own selves dressed, and then as she slipped her gown on, everything went silent. Everyone was in awe of this moment as the bride-to-be became the bride.

Editing

I cleaned up the image quite a bit. Since it was a gloomy day, the light in the image was very flat. I raised the highlights and darkened the shadows to up the contrast. I didn't want the elements of the loft to be distracting from the moment. I used a matte effect to give it that velvety look and added a peachy filter with low opacity to infuse a creamy texture.

In my camera bag

I normally have a Canon T3i, 50mm, 17-85mm, and one "play" lens. Lately that's been my 10-22mm.

Feedback

Patience. And awareness. Look for the moment. Anticipate what's about to happen. You have to be 150% involved in what's going on around you. You have to feel the stress, the joy, the intensity of where you are. Know what's going to happen, envision the image, and wait for it.
