Would love to know more about this ploughing. It seems to be incredibly deep. Not seen like this in Australia, and I'm for a farming family

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo from my front door as I'm very lucky to be surrounded by amazing countryside, being arable land there is always something interesting going on.

Time

This photo was probably taken around 6:30am, during the first self-imposed outdoors cigarette of the day. It's amazing what you see during these outdoor times when you don't wish to smoke indoors where your children are.

Lighting

The lighting in this scene was totally natural, coming across the field at almost right angles to the ridges the farmer was forming. It gave the scene a beautiful, high contrast appearance. Combined with the mist in the ridges from the warmth of the ground that had been imparted by the previous few days warm weather createdthe feeling to this shot.

Equipment

This photo was shot with a Nikon D5100 and a Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6, hand-held with natural lighting.

Inspiration

It was one of those "quick, grab your camera" moments. There was no real planning to this shot, I saw the tractor ridging the field, with the side lighting and the mist in th furrows and it all just happened!

Editing

In the way of post processing, I desaturated the image in photoshop, adjusted the contrast to accentuate the darkness of the furrows and that was about it!

In my camera bag

I always have my Nikon D5100 with me, where ever I go. Whether it's going to the shops, the park with the kids or a pre-planned photo shoot, it's always with me 24/7. As for lenses, I have the standard 18-55mm kit lens, which is superb for general shooting. A Sigma 10-20mm ultra wide for those vast landscapes shots or for when perspective distortion is needed. A Tamron 70-300 for when I need more reach for wildlife and a 50mm f/1.8 for portraits and those shots where you really want a good bit of differential focus and bokeh.

Feedback

If you want to get shots like this, my advice is; take your camera everywhere with you. No matter what you're doing, take it! The best photo ops present themselves when you really least expect it. Keep your camera with you 24/7 and be prepared to snap, some of the best shots happen through accident. For a shot like this one though, get the light side on to the subject, the sun low in the sky and make sure the blacks in your black and whites are truly black! Don't be afraid of dark shots, they can convey so much feeling!
