Behind The Lens

Location

Well I would love to tell you that this was taken in some exotic location where I had to trek for miles to reach a secret destination but the truth is . In my front garden…. These are Japanese Anemones that were given to us from the garden of my partner's father some years ago. In that time they have self seeded and are a joy when they flower. I am a great believer in not ignoring the beauty that is under our noses…

Time

As my front garden is north facing it is short of sunlight even in the summer so this was taken in the late afternoon to catch the best light I could…

Lighting

Lighting is everything to a photographer. It might be an obvious thing to say but it is the element through which we perceive our surroundings . The trick is to be able to reproduce our feelings and perceptions through that lens and into the finished image. Never an easy task..Keeping an eye on the changing light throughout the day was key to capturing this image.

Equipment

My camera of choice is the Nikon D700 and the lens I used was the Nikon 105 Macro lens. Very true in both colour reproduction and perspective. I ' love ' that lens and what it does…

Inspiration

Quite simple, beauty. Although I put my own interpretation in the edit of the flower, the flower showed to me its grace and poise as it does every year and I had no option but to try and capture it in my own small way. This is one of a series of three called, 'Oh My 1', 2 and 3 and the title reflects my feeling towards something so common but so perfect.

Editing

Do you know something, I hate that question.. Why ? Well this was taken in August 2013 and in truth I can't remember. I find that my editing reflects the light, location and subject of the photograph, my feelings towards the image and whether it shows what I want it to show. I don't follow a specific editing formula very much regarding photographs and try not to get into just one way of doing things.

In my camera bag

My equipment is quite basic compared to a lot of photographers. Nikon D700 Camera Nikon 105mm f/2.8 VR G Lens Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8 G ED mid zoom LensA and a old Nikon180mm Telephoto Lens and that's about it .. I do have a very shaky tripod which stays in the cupboard most of the time..

Feedback

I like to travel light with the camera in my hand and react to what I come across rather than make elaborate plans about a shot… That's really bad advice, I know but outside a studio, that's how I like to do it.. This wonderful hobby/profession of photographer is the means of expression. It doesn't really matter what equipment you have. Although having the best you can afford might help, it's the vision you hold thats the important thing. Never stop learning and trying to learn because you will never know everything…..
