Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my garden. The best thing about this photo is the early-Spring look of the pots against the wall, and the lichen-covered bark of the bare trees and bushes.

Time

This is one of the usual look-out places in the garden for the rabbit. From here he can see the entirety of the garden, watching other mammals as they move along the back fence. I took this photo at just past 10:00 AM in March.

Lighting

The late-morning sunshine of the start of Spring provided the perfect intensity of natural light to harmonise with the light provided by my flash, resulting in a very natural feeling photo. The cold air temperatures of the day are clearly demonstrated by the cool colours of the paving and bark, whilst subtle hints of warmth are brought into the photo by the unopened narcissus head, and the vibrant red Evening Primrose.

Equipment

On the day I took the photo I was out in the garden photographing Spring birds, and the occasional flower poking its head out of the wet leaves. I noticed the rabbit had positioned himself in a place where the lighting was ideal for capturing an early-Spring shot. From where I was standing it looked like he was hiding behind the tree trunk (albeit not particularly well). My tripod was set up at the other end of the garden where I'd spotted a gathering of fieldfares. I didn't want to miss this photo opportunity, so I balanced my Nikon D70 on my knee for a more steady shot. I had my Nikon 55-300 mm f4.5-5.6 lens attached, which gave me enough range to capture the shot. I used just the built in flash, which did not make a lot of difference, but was enough to enhance the cold colours.

Inspiration

As I said, I was photographing other subjects in the garden, looking for a scene to perfectly represent early-Spring. This was it.

Editing

I increased the blur of the grass in the lower portion of this photo, to enhance the tree trunk and rabbit. Other than that I did not need to carry out any post-processing - the colours were just right due to the late-moring Sun at that time of year.

In my camera bag

Generally when I am away from home I have with me my Lowepro Nova 180 AW, a trust bag which is capable of holding all the necessary equipment, excluding a tripod. In the bag is my Nikon D70, a 55-300 mm f4.5-5.6 lens, a prime 35 mm f2.0 lens, a range of filters including UV, a circular polarise, and a diffuser, several GB worth of CF cards, and my compact camera (Canon Powershot A470) for quick photos where none of the other equipment is necessary, or for boating trips.

Feedback

I did not go out in the morning with this photograph specifically in mind, although I had previously decided on a theme. To capture that theme I waited for an overcast morning so the Sun was not too bright, nor too dark. If I were to capture this again I would use a prime lens with a shorter focal length and wider aperture, to let more light in, and to achieve more clarity of the main objects in the photo. A tripod is useful when taking shots which have been carefully planned out, however for quick photos such as this, the knee is just as effective at steadying the camera.
