Behind The Lens

Location

I've visited the non-profit Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary in South Dakota, for the last 2 years. There you are free to walk among the hundreds of horses and photograph to your heart's content. This is one of those images.

Time

*That year I went in the start of October, maybe the first week. I had a chance to stay out a little later one night so I caught a break from the normally harsh overhead sun and had a chance at a more normal exposure that mirrors the subject of tho photograph.

Lighting

Mostly what I put in the last answer. The only thing I can think to add is that the freedom to be able to walk around makes lighting a a lot easier.

Equipment

My camera was a Nikon D7000, with the 70-300 mm lens. At 5.6 and ASA 400 the exposure for this was 1/1600. It was hand held. The only filter was a UV/Daylight filter.

Inspiration

To see these horses running free on this range is breathtaking. I shoot all day long. This one was a natural due to the interaction of the horses.

Editing

I cropped it a little and lightened the horses faces where they had been caught in shadow.

In my camera bag

I don't carry a bag normally. I select the two cameras with the lenses I need, depending on what I will be shooting, have a small bag with filters and cleaner in it, and lots of cards, and that works for me, whether on the horse ranch or downtown Seattle. I make sure the cameras and lenses will cover 98% of what I am going to take, and I miss a few shots, but would I have gotten them if I I had to dig for equipment? The only thing I can say I consistently take if I am doing portraits is my 40 year old handheld light meter, Oh, and always, extra batteries.

Feedback

If you are going to shoot horses in this type of environment it pays to know something bout there behavior. Not only will it keep you from being in the wrong place at the wrong time, it will let you see when a a good moment is about to happen. Horses are social creatures and they give off signals about their intentions like we do. Learn some of them.Figure out whose friends with who. Things like that.
