Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Evergreen Cemetery in Jacksonville Florida. A lot of my family are buried there.

Time

This shot was taken in 1995. I was a senior in high school. I don't exactly remember the time of day, but I do remember it being towards the end of the day because I was loosing light. I would think around 5pm.

Lighting

Not really.

Equipment

I shot this image with my very first (and favorite) camera. It was a manual Olympus om10. If I remember correctly, I was using the standard lens that it came with. It was also my first attempt at a triple exposure. I didn't have a tripod at the time, so I just stood as still as possible while I instructed her where to stand next. It didn't come out perfect, but I fell in love with the photo. Even today it's still one of my favorites.

Inspiration

I was taking a photography class. My instructor was expecting me to turn something in soon. A friend of mine had been asking if I would take her out for a photo shoot. She could come off kinda dark at times, so I thought a cemetery was fitting. Boy was I right. She was completely comfortable.

Editing

I developed the film myself in a dark room. I used a film enlarger. Developed the paper. Totally old school.

In my camera bag

I always carry my D200, ExpoDisc, an extra battery, a couple of 2GB cards and my car window shades to redirect light when I need to. I don't have a lot of equipment. I don't like a heavy pack. I would rather take the essentials and feel less weighed down.

Feedback

My advice for trying to capture a triple exposure using a manual camera is to bring a tripod. It would probably make for better results. ;)
