Behind The Lens

Location

I shot this photo in my mother's living room! She has a great chaise that looks vintage and worked beautifully during this same session when the model was lounging in a beaded gown.

Time

The photo was shot in the late afternoon.

Lighting

To the model's right (photo left) is a large window. We needed some fill and pointing anything at the model was problematic because of shadows, so I improvised and bounced a small soft box flash off the opposite wall.

Equipment

I used a Pentax K5-II, lens 28mm f/2.8.

Inspiration

I'm mad about the HBO series "Boardwalk Empire" and am interested in 1920s fashion and decor.

Editing

I increased the blur in specific areas in this photo and played with Greater Than Gatsby's Wet Plate action set for the vintage texture and coloring. GTG and Alien Skin Exposure have the best vintage filters that I've come across thus far.

In my camera bag

I always pack my 50mm f/1.4 whether I'm shooting concerts or portraits. It's my 'go to' lens. I also pack a 28mm - 70mm f/2.8 and a 35mm f/2.8 prime. I also often have an 85mm lens. And, of course, I always pack plenty of batteries and extra cards!!

Feedback

Vintage is tricky. Often attempts at replicating vintage photography are unsuccessful and appear to be what they are - present-day photos with filters. The most successful retro photographs are created via vintage equipment and processing, for example, with polaroid cameras and wet plate processing. I do not possess vintage equipment, so I tried to create a timeless homage to the era via styling, light and processing. Prior to the shoot, I studied and deconstructed similar photos from that particular era and the most common modeling poses for women at the time. I asked my model to channel her inner Daisy from The Great Gatsby and she nailed it!
