Behind The Lens

Location

This was captured at Campbells Cove, located near Werribee, Victoria Australia. This location is a small strip of beach with many 'beach shacks' and old fishing boats.

Time

This was shot just as the sun was rising and is part of a series taken pre-dawn, as the sun was rising and then post sun-rise

Lighting

All natural lighting

Equipment

Nikon D800 with Nikon 17-35mm F2.8 (now retired). My old aluminium tripod (also now retired) and Lee Big + Little stoppers. The 900 second exposure time was used to create a soft, silky feel to the ocean and give lots of detail in the low light to the boat and foreground.

Inspiration

I was learning to use the new Filters (Lee Big/Little stoppers) and was looking a suitable location. An Australian facebook group had a post up about a joint morning shoot looking at long exposures - so off I went.

Editing

Post-processing was mostly completed via Lightroom, this involved lens profile and chromatic aboration adjusment, the 'normal' Black/Shadow and White/Highlight adjustments, some selective colour adjustments. Texture/Clarity adjustments were targeted at specific areas via Perfect Photo Suite.

In my camera bag

A lot! Nikon D800 body, Nikon 14-24mm F2.8, Sigma 24-120mm F4, Nikon 45mm Tilt Shift F2.8, Sigma 150mm Macro, Sigma 150-500mm. Accessories include Remote Trigger, GPS attachment. Tripod wise I am using a Sirui tripod with ball head. And in addition have a Novoflex VR Slimline pano head along with a Magic Balance

Feedback

A good steady tripod, spotless filters and being on site early to help pre-visualise the scene and work out composition is vital. Good planning will help ensure that the image works well, and will reduce the editing time required later.
