Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in our home bathroom right after my guy finished his morning routine.

Time

Early in the morning my kids like to play around. When he was 3 years old he liked to make funny faces at himself in the mirror and he wasn’t yet self conscious of me standing behind him with the camera.

Lighting

Bathroom vanity lighting has always appeared flattering to me. It’s probably the most common lighting we see of ourselves, standing in front of the mirror I simply used the available light in the room.

Equipment

I’m pretty sure this was with a Canon 50D and a Sigma 35mm 1.8 Lens. My first lens other than kit lenses. I loved the low light ability and playing with depth of field.

Inspiration

I try to document our life. These details remind me of personality as well as details of our house. I can remember the chaos of this age, the smell of the room after the hot shower steamed up the space, the giggles it created when he saw his face in the mirror

Editing

Yes. I adjust tint and temperature in Lightroom as well as contrast. Sometimes I sharpen for clarity. This one was a simple edit.

In my camera bag

Nowadays I have a Canon: 5D Mark III, 135mm 2.0, 50mm 1.4, and Sigma 24mm 1.4 Art. Those stay in my bag and the 135 is my go to lens.

Feedback

Have your camera out and easily accessible if you want to capture life at home. Keep the 50mm on the camera because it’s wide enough to be used in tight spaces but tight enough to focus in and eliminate clutter or what doesn’t add to your image. I was probably outside the door photographing so I wasn’t intruding in the moment. I could stand quietly and capture what was happening before he stopped being himself and started posing (or stopped cooperating for the camera)
