Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken from Wembury Point, on the south Devon coast near Plymouth, UK. The island is called the Great Mewstone. This small rocky island stands about half a mile out from Wembury Point and is the largest offshore island for many miles along the South Devon coast. The Great Mewstone gets its name from the old English name for the herring gull and these, along with many other birds, are the only inhabitants on the island these days.

Time

This was taken around three in the afternoon, on a cold January day. My partner and I went out for a walk with our cameras as the clouds and light looked promising! It's one of our favorite spots in Devon, and we are lucky to live just a few miles away.

Lighting

The sun was in just the right place in relation to the cloud cover. The small gaps between the little clouds was letting shafts of sunlight shine through, lighting up an area of the sea beneath.

Equipment

This was hand held, taken with a Panasonic Lumix G6, with a Samyang 7.5mm fisheye lens.

Inspiration

The beauty of the location, the clouds, the sunlight - everything I love about nature was just right!

Editing

Yes, but not much. A little tweaking of highlights and shadows in Lightroom, and a bit of noise reduction.

In my camera bag

As little as possible! I like to travel light, hence my preference for the Micro Four Thirds system. I have the fisheye lens used in this shot, a kit lens covering 14mm- 42mm, and a telephoto 45mm-200mm. I can cover most subjects with that range, and it doesn't break the bank - or my back!

Feedback

Photography in this area is very rewarding - if you like capturing nature in it's raw state. We get a lot of rain, wind and rough seas. The weather, and therefore the lighting, change so rapidly. The sun can burst through the clouds on an otherwise dull day, giving a brief but glorious photo opportunity! Visit and enjoy!
