Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken when I was wandering about El Gothic in Barcelona, and the street artist caught my eyes.

Time

It was at noon of the day, in the golden autumn season of September in 2013.

Lighting

The natural sunlight was wonderful in Spain at such a great season-time, and all those architectures in places like El Gothic helped to create and enhance sharp shadow-light comparison.

Equipment

I used a digital camera: Canon PowerShot G15, to take this photo.

Inspiration

I believe anyone set eyes on that street artist would have done the same as I did -- snap it! With all that sunlight, shadow, environment, costume, it actually picturized a part of my dream of the cultural southern Europe -- it made me sentimental for a while once I saw her.

Editing

Nope. The signature sunlight in Spain, the serenity this place it always has, the work the street artist had done --all these unburdened any photographer's work load. All I had to do was to find a right angle to deliver what beauty I saw and how it made me feel. In this photo, what I took was what I saw.

In my camera bag

When traveling around, I always carry Canon PowerShot G15. It's light in weight, and the functions are easy to handle. When I take street-snaps, this small camera appears less offensive to the objects (human) too. It doesn't require tripod in dim light (for instance, taking photos in church/cathedral during day time) as long as you don't have too much ambition to get a "sharp" take.

Feedback

Usually, natural light at noon is not favorable to photographers. But if there's tall architecture around, it may create some dramatic light-shadow comparison. Try to be more "open" to any cliche themes. Try to find out something that really touches you about a subject. When I took this photo, there were several other tourists also taking it. Maybe some of them took a much better one. Don't think that much, just focus on delivering what that subject is in your own eyes.
