Behind The Lens

Location

The photograph was taken in our abandon chicken coop in Kintore, Ontario.

Time

On February 2nd, 2015 at 11:30am My friend and I toke the morning off to go take pictures around our run down farm for our assignments as we are studying photography at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. As we try to survive the blizzard that was going on we decided to take shelter in the chicken coop where I stumbled across this scene. It was the perfect time of day as the lighting wasn't too dark.

Lighting

The lighting was great in this photo. The light coming in through the window was the only light avaliable but it was the only light I needed. Since there was a blizzard occurring when this photo was taken it help to almost tone down the brightness so that it was over powering the inside of the building.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D7100, with my 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens. My camera settings were ISO 100 , 20 mm , f/5 and 1/25. I did use my tripod .

Inspiration

I love taking photo's of things that other people might just pass on. Some people may just call this an average shot of a run down building's windows and nothing interesting to it. Some people like my self can appericate the detail and tonal range that the wood offers. I loved the detail in the snow as I thought it was so interesting the way the drifts formed. I wanted to photograph how beautiful snow can be even though most canadians complain about it ( I will admit it I complain about it too.) I was inspired to take this to be unique but also have great composition with the rule of thirds.

Editing

I did a bit of post-processing on this photo. I submitted this photograph for an winter scene assignment with no post-processing on it. My professor returned the picture and showed me some simply techniques to take my photo to the next level. We brought the clarity up to give the photograph an HDR effect. That effect really brought out the a cracked paint on the wood which I just loved. I also removed a bunch of branches and vines that were very distracting in the photograph. I also darkened the wood a little bit to create a mysterious and dramatic look.

In my camera bag

As I have just started to really take interest in photography I don't have a lot in my camera bag. I have my 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR kit lens and my nifty fifty as people like to call it. In the future I want to get more lens to add to my collection.

Feedback

My advice to everyone else is don't be afraid to be different. Don't be afraid to stop and take a photo that most people would just walk by. In the end we are our own photographers so we might as well stand out from everyone else even if that means taking a risk at photographing something to other would look at and just think an average shot.
