This photo was taken in my backyard during the summer in Indiana. I am not a professional photographer, but I do enjoy "playing around" with my camera.Time
This was a beautiful late afternoon in summer. Our backyard faces west and I am able to capture some wonderful golden glows just before sunset.Lighting
I would love to be able to say I had this all planned out prior to the shot, but the reality is, I observed the opportunity as it was happening. I will point out that transparent materials can be great reflectors with the right angles and lighting.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 7D using an EF-S 18-200mm lense. No other special camera equipment was necessary. This shot did require the use of a poster frame which came fitted with a clear protector.Inspiration
My daughter and her best friend love to model for photos. We had recently returned from vacation where matching shirts had been purchased and they wanted to take advantage of the beautiful day we were having. They started out wanting to do some frame shots, but the only thing we had readily available was a poster frame and it had a clear protector fitted into it. Not wanting to destroy the frame, I suggested we go ahead and try to see what shots we could get. As we were playing around, I realized how well the light was reflecting off this transparent surface and decided to try and capture a "ghost" image. It worked very well with them wearing matching shirts.Editing
The only post-processing needed was a crop. In the original photo, you can see both girls standing on either side of the frame, with one being reflected. I cropped the photo to remove her, leaving only her reflection. In my camera bag
I always carry an extra battery and a charger just in case! As I mentioned earlier, I am definitely not a professional photographer. I know how to adjust my camera to get the results I want, but I couldn't discuss it in proper terminology. I am learning, though, so I usually keep some type of guide or instruction book in my bag. I have an additional lense(70-300)as well. Being a mom, you'd probably find some other odds and ends that have nothing to do with photography! hahaFeedback
To get a great reflection from an object that is typically see through, you've got to play around with the angles and lighting. For this shot, that meant moving around the yard, as I was only using natural lighting. Once the angle for best reflection was determined, it was just a matter of getting her to continue holding the frame just right as I snapped a few shots.
