Behind The Lens

Location

I have a set up a photo studio in my garage, when we moved here this was actually a workshop and I still use it for that purpose when i need to work on my wifes car or something. So, I had my friend Freddy come over for a test shoot i wanted to do. I always love to use fire in my images and i needed someone who looked a bit rough.

Time

Mid day if I recall correctly. We spent an hour or so discussing the setup and clothing before we started shooting. Since this was a studio setup time of day does not really matter. Although the background for this image was taken just before christmas dinner on christmas eve when I was out walking my dog before our guest was arriving. it was a good day for winter landscape photography. slightly sunny and clear sky. Awesome.

Lighting

I use Elinchrom strobes. I have one rx2 and two rx4 and a bunch of softboxes and stuff.. mainly I end up using a stripbox and a 120cm octabox, and sometimes a fill light in the back of the subject. When i shot background i mainly shoot them at cloudy days and sunsets witch have the most interesting light i think.

Equipment

I am a Canon guy, I started of with a 135mm body over ten years ago before i even knew they had started making digital cameras. Now i use the 5dmk3 witch was an upgrade from the 1100. Since lenses are so darn expensive I use my kit lens the 24 - 105mm as much as i can. For certain portraits I use the canon 50mm f1.8 witch is a great lens for its price. As mentioned I use Elinchrom studio strobes. And I am constantly reminding myself to use a tripod more often. I have one, I just dont like using it. I feel trapped and cant get the freedom i need.

Inspiration

I think several action movies over the years. Explosions, fire and guns. I wanted to make a mafia kind of portrait and I knew my friend here had this black and white striped suit. The guns i bought for a photoshoot with my wife a couple of years back, they came in handy. :)

Editing

Always, and all the time. This particular image is a composite of i think seven images. You got the main subject, the background and all the fire, bullets and shells. Every photo has its own layer and its matching adjustments layers. And i got my own action i put on all my images.

In my camera bag

My camera with the 24-105mm lens, a few filters (polaroid and nv´s), a spare memory card, battery charger (dont know why but i always bring it), a flashlight, some business cards and a mini tripod as well as my 50mm lens.

Feedback

Use your imagination and plan the shoot and imagine what kind of image you want to make in advance. The more you have worked out in your head in advance the better your composition gets. there are so many thing to think about and you cant plan ahead enough.
