Wonderful lighting and mood!
Not too keen on the reflection though - draws my eye away from the main subject. Just my 2 cents.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken in my home studio in High River Alberta

Time

It was the early morning (before nap time for a happy boy!)

Lighting

I really wanted a more dramatic lighting for this image, so I had two light sources set up. First main light was camera right, and a hair light to separate him from the black background.

Equipment

I shoot with a Nikon D800, this was with the 50mm 1.4, two flash units (SB600 and SB900)

Inspiration

I really love seeing my kids respond to music. When their daddy plays the guitar (which isn't often enough) they just sit and watch. I really wanted to give my son a chance to 'play', and he had a lot of fun doing this shoot!

Editing

I had just learned about split toning to create some pretty dynamic images. I had more of a 'grunge' type editing style in mind when I set this image up.

In my camera bag

My 70-200 2.8 rarely leaves my camera for outdoor sessions when I have the space. For studio work, I always have my 50mm 1.4 and 24-70 2.8 on hand, and also use my macro 105mm for details. (Since I mainly shoot newborns!)

Feedback

I always find while working with kids and toddlers it's best to give them a fun 'job' to do. I guide them as much as possible, but really try to let them do their own thing, so I can capture true emotions. It's always exciting for me to see where the session goes. Sometimes I get the best shots when the session goes nothing as planned. Kids and toddlers (especially my own kiddos) always keep me on my toes!
