Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken at the model's house on the outside verandah whilst playing dressups.

Time

Taken mid-morning .The day was very bright, but by utilising the shade on the verandah the lighting was perfect .

Lighting

I love the golden hour in photography and generally try to shoot in the evening, but this was the only time suitable. I always try to use natural lighting when shooting children.

Equipment

I am the mother of 8 children, so my equipment is very basic, and bought second hand of Ebay. I started using a Canon 400d and still love it. I dream of the day I can upgrade to a newer model but for now this has to suffice. I used the Canon 50mm , which is my favourite for this type of portrait. I never use flash, but in time would like to expand my knowledge with flash photography. I believe everyone see's something different through the lens, thatn is the beauty of photography

Inspiration

I just love capturing children in their natural beauty. I take along a box of dressups and let them play with whatever they like. I find trying to pose children in a studio unnatural and stressful for both the child and myself, so outdoors playing is my favourite style . I often stand back using my Tamron 70-300 to zoom in and capture what I see without being to noticeable to them.

Editing

I always post process , sometimes just a quick touch up to remove spots, and other times I will run an action, Paint the Moon are some of my favourites. Sometimes I add texture. Each photo speaks to me , this particular photo was lovely in colour and also black and white. I added a texture to the background and a very slight viginette so the face really captured the viewers attention.

In my camera bag

I travel very lightly, but always make sure to have extra charged batteries and memory cards. I check equipment the night before which saves any stress on the day. My 50 mm lens is always close on hand. An absolute must with children is a small pack of baby wipes and tissues for runny noses and dirty faces

Feedback

Always be aware of the light and shadow on the model's face. I always try to focus on the eyes . To capture natural expression try to let children play , engage them in the session by showing them .the pictures and let them pull some funny faces . Relax and enjoy your session.
