This is "The Dark Hedges," an off-the-beaten-track lane of beech trees planted in 1750 in the Antrim area of Northern Ireland. It's hard to find, but thoroughly worthwhile for any photographer.

Behind The Lens

Location

This is a shot of the iconic "Dark Hedges," a lane of beech trees planted in 1750 in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, about an hour inland, south of the "Giant's Causeway" and the Carrick-a-rede rope bridge on the northern coast.

Time

After getting very lost on various backroads I got there about noon, early October.

Lighting

Although I was there at mid-day, when light is often harsh, it made no difference. The road was about 90 percent in the shade of the trees.

Equipment

Shot with a Canon EOS Rebel 4ti with a Tamron 18-270 F/3.5-6.3 lens on a monopod, with no flash.

Inspiration

Before I left the US, I went on the internet and identified a number of places that I really wanted to photograph, mostly out-of-the-way, non-touristy places such as something as simple as an abandoned house at the end of the Black Valley Road in County Kerry in the southern part of the Republic of Ireland. I could not find out where the Dark Hedges were located until I went into a tourist office at the Giant's Causeway, where they printed out Mapquest directions for me.

Editing

I did a little, including bluring some places where a green wire fence took away from the scene. I had dozens of shots from which to choose, including ones with everything from bikers to tractor drivers, but finally settled on this shot, which sets a lonely mood.

In my camera bag

I carry two Canon cameras, including an EOS Rebel 3ti, and various lenses (18-55 kit lens and Canon 70-300 mm Ultrasonic 1:4-5.6 lens) but I usually just use the Tamron lens, which allows me to go wide or tight without switching back and forth between cameras. I also carry a tripod, a monopod and an external flash.

Feedback

Go on the internet and look for lanes. There are a number of classic places in the US, including a lane of ancient oaks at a Mississippi plantation.
