Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the model's apartment bedroom, who happens to be a close friend. We work together to create magical photos.

Time

I arrived at my friend's house mid morning to apply her makeup and carefully place each paper flower on her body. I hand made the flowers a few days before and was excited to see how they worked for my vision. I chose to shoot early in the day because the only lighting we had to work with was from the bedroom windows.

Lighting

I wanted the photograph to look mysterious and enchanting, so I didn't want to use a flash. I worked with the natural lighting from the window in the room to give her a soft tone.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 5D Mark II and 50mm lens with no additional equipment.

Inspiration

I was inspired by fairytales for this photo, specifically Sleeping Beauty. For a long time I had wanted to created a series that embraced the traits of my favorite stories. In my head I had imagery of these grand, dreamy scenarios, and I wanted to create that.

Editing

In this photo I did minimal correcting. I added some brush textures around the edging to enhance the dreamy, magical state she was in, as well as a slight coloring action.

In my camera bag

I love my Canon 50mm prime lens because my favorite sessions involve capturing women. The lens helps create the shallow depth of field that I love. So, that is always in my bag with my Canon 5D Mark II, reflectors, flash, and standard lens.

Feedback

My advice for capturing a similar photo would be to find inspiration and plan ahead. I had a clear vision of what I wanted and knew the props and wardrobe that I needed to be satisfied. It also helps to find a model who is up for the creativity. I'm very blessed to have a friend that I rely on for these photoshoots. But, its also worth it to experiment on the day. Take more shots of angles and positions you might not have planned on.
