The captain had told me that occasionally on a clear sky sunset, just as the Sun disappears from view, there is a thin, green flash of light that flashes across the horizon. That is what I was looking for when this photo was taken and also the previous night with similar conditions. I did not see what he described, but I did see a green ring around the Sun that lasted for about a 1-4 second. It was not captured on camera but I did see it.
