Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken by the lake Vatn in West Iceland (in Haukadalur, Dalabyggð). It was a beautiful and calm winter night and and very nice to see the northern lights reflect in the water.

Time

It was a moment somewhere around midnight, not the most powerful northern lights I have seen but definitely very beautiful to capture.

Lighting

I did use flash light to lighten up the boat, otherwise it would have been dark like the mountain. I think the cold light tone from the flashlight makes the photo even more interesting :)

Equipment

This photo was taken in October 2012. At that time I used Nikon D7000 and Nikkor 17-55 2.8 and of course a tripod which is necessary when photographing in the dark. And the flashlight was also very important, first of all to see in the dark and also to have the opportunitie to do some light painting.

Inspiration

I chose this location to get the northern lights to reflect in the water, I think it does a lot for this photo. It is easy to fall in love with the northern lights, they are always dancing new dances to charm the viewers :)

Editing

It is a raw file I edited in Lightroom, I fixed exposure, increased clarity and sharpness, used noise reduction, saturation and so on.

In my camera bag

Today I use Nikon D600 and have good lenses for landscape, northern lights, portraits and macro. What I carry with me depends on what I am going to photograph. When I am shooting northern lights I use Nikkor 14-24mm but for portraits I prefer prime lenses.

Feedback

If you are going out for northern lights you should choose location without city lights and it is always best to have pretty clear sky, but of course it can also be charming to have few clouds. You can use some app in your phone to monitor the activity, I use it a lot. Remember to take your tripod with you, use bright and wide lens, have fully charged battery and an extra battery is always better. If you have remote control you should use it. And always wear warm clothes and enjoy the lights :)
