Location
The photo of the boat dog, was taken on the Caldey Island ferry leaving from Tenby in South Wales. It amazes me how few people know about this secluded island and it's beautiful beach.Time
abot 11am, not golden hour by any stretch. Cloud cover helped the exposureLighting
I exposed for the dogs eyes, without blowing the background out too much. The eyes are important in any instance of photography, but colour and definition was essential here.Equipment
Fujifilm x100 with built in flash to balance the light. An incredible cameraInspiration
The dog was a character, jumping into the sea and back on. Playing with his ball on the beach. I'm a dog lover as well as a photography lover so it's the perfect match.Editing
Some work was done to add clarity but the shot looks as taken, colour wise. The highlights were bought down, and the shadows taken up as it was hard to balance the broght sky with a poor built in flash. The dynamic range of my fuji was a saviour. In my camera bag
My primary camera gear is a Nikon D700, 24-85mm f2.8. 50mm f1.8. And a Nikon 105mm f2.8 macro. Just for general walk around photography, landscapes, urban and music photography.Feedback
Try and document travel through the characters that you meet. Whether animal or person. A picture of a ferry is meaningless on it's own. But this photo has soul due to this depiction of a character who has been part of the ferry for many years. I always say a photo should have multiple punch lines. The title, it's content, maybe something you don't notice at first are essential to rise above 'point and click' style photography. Show people you truly meditated on your shot. With this photo, a reflector would have meant better balanced light and less noise being introduced. With a reflector, I could have taken this same shot with an iphone.
