Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the main square of Bratislava, Slovakia when I was travelling 3 years ago. We ended up here simply because the night before we had a rock-paper-scissors to decide whether to go to Poland or Slovakia

Time

It was around 11pm and smack in the middle of a pub crawl...more on that later

Lighting

It was completely dark by this point however the orange street lighting was playing beautifully off the cobblestones

Equipment

The only thing I had on me at the time apart from my clothes were my wallet and phone, so phone it was. Nexus 4 with tiny world built in feature selected, standing as still as I could moving the camera around my body, the amount of darkness helped in the swaying

Inspiration

My friend was shouting at me to keep walking otherwise we'd fall behind the crawl, but I was mesmerised by the scene and knew it had to captured on camera. I honestly have no idea how I managed to get the photo looking as crisp as it did after the amount of beers I'd had, I seem to remember it took a few attempts

Editing

Only a little bit of contrast boosting on Picasa, nothing fancy at all!

In my camera bag

I've since updated from a phone and purchased an Olympus OMD EM5 which, being a compact system, I take nearly everywhere with me

Feedback

These days it's far easier to take such photos with 360 cameras by Ricoh, Samsung and 360Fly. However it is good to know that with a phone from 2012, or the right apps or built in features in your latest phone taking something like this is possible. It just takes a fair bit of patience (15-20 minutes to get right) and practiced movement of keeping the camera as stationary as possible. Happy snapping!
