Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a photo meet up in Orlando, Florida. One of many that I belong to. Sometimes I wish there could be more to get involved. So now I belong to Orlando and Tampa groups.

Time

This was taken mid day in studio environment. Local studio here in Orlando. One of many that I used and have access to.

Lighting

The lighting in the studio was a typical studio set up, with white walls and overhead flourescent lights. We did have some natural lights with the windows, but not much during the time of shoot. I brought my beauty dish set-up on a light stand with my wireless triggers and position them where I think will works.

Equipment

The equipment I used varies for what I am shooting. For this shot, my lighting is a Paul Buff beauty dish set up with Alien Bees strobe light on a battery for mobile. Trigger with Pocket wizard MiniTT1 on my camera and FlexTT5 with a AC9 AlienBees adapter that I can control the light power using the AC3 Zone controller on my miniTT1. I use my Canon 5DII with a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens.

Inspiration

The model was very beautiful, which made it easy and was prepare to do the shoot. I pretty much was waiting for her to get her groove on. You know watching her move and get settle in front of the camera. I like to catch them off gaurd. Sometimes shoot them while they are not looking at the lens. I like those shots. But this one I waited for her to look up at me and click.

Editing

This shot has little post-processing due to that I am learning to do as much as I can on the camera. I've been practing to do more off the camera and less post-processing. Especially, since in the beginning I was doing it the other way around. I spent to many hours processing and less time shooting.

In my camera bag

In my bag I have a Canon 5DmkII, with a battery grip. That contains two batteries. My lens are Canon 24-105mm F/4 lens, 70-200mm f/2.8 lens, and a 85mm f/2.8 lens. A couple of CF cards, two 8gb and 4gb. My triggers come in a smaller bag that goes into the beauty dish bag. For triggers I have a miniTT1 , a couple of FlexTT5 that comes with the AC9 AlienBees adapter and AC3 Zone controller that attaches to the miniTT1 on my camera to trigger the Alien Bees. This give me control of the light power in the Aliens Bees. Plus, cleaning essentials for lens and camera. Macbook laptop for quick editing and cords for download and strobe light connections.

Feedback

My advice is to practice, practice, practice. I've started out with nothing but a Canon rebel and had my girlfriend be my first model. But before I did all this I did landscape, macro and shooting anything that will give an opportunity to used my camera. As I started to understand my camera and learn the functions and use the triangle method = Aperture-ISO-Shutter speed. Then I became more comfortable to start asking people to model for me. Starting again with my girlfriend, then my family and friends. As I got familiar with my camera, I started to upgrade and get more equipment. From there it was just me be creative. But practicing was the only way to go. I would pretend that I was hired to do a shoot for a client and role play. Making sure that I had everything I needed to do the shoot. One thing that you don't want others to know is that you don't know what you are doing.
